Starting the rehabilitation of the Varna airport runway

40 million leva is the investment in preparation and implementation of the project

With the official groundbreaking started the implementation of the project for rehabilitation for the runway landing of Airport Varna. The investment of ‘Fraport Twin Star Airport Management’  Ltd, concessionaire of the airport, in this project is 40 million leva.
In the presence of officials and guests, the CEO of the company, Dirk Schusdziara, and the Regional Governor of Varna region, Mr. Dancho Simeonov gave the symbolic start.
The project for rehabilitation for the runway started in 2009 with prefeasibility researches of the German Schlegel Consulting Engineers – world leader in designing runways which made detailed technical report with analysis and suggestions for implementation of the rehabilitation. The German company acts as project manager and ‘Rubicon Engineering’ ltd will supervise the project.
The existing runway is concrete with a width of 45 m with two side safety strips of 5 m and 2500 m.
It is envisaged extension of the shoulders of the runway landing with 7.5m each side, structural overlay of three layers of asphalt as the upper two layers will be bitumen polymer. It is also provided 6000m new drainage system, complete replacement of light system and development of 140,000 square meters green land.
The rehabilitation will last 45 work days. Will be put 150 300 tons asphalt or 4500 tons per day. Will be made very complex organization for synchronization of 80 transport, construction and asphalt planting machines for 24 hours of treatment. For the project near to Airport Varna are built modern facilities ‘Beninghoven’ for polymer asphalt with a capacity of 240 tons / hour. Chief executive of rehabilitation is Max Boegl Bauunternehmung. Partner of the Bulgarian side is "Ingstroyengineering" Ltd. It is expected for the project to be employed 500 employees only for the terriory of the airport.
